Were you really friends with Prince?

No, Prince used the word “friends” to refer to his “fans”.  He felt the word fan had a negative connotation as being a “fanatic”. So, we are all Prince’s Friends.

I saw your video mentioning The Revolution. Did you like that band?

I love The Revolution and I hope to see them on their current tour.  They are a group of gifted musicians with a tremendous and very special history with Prince.  That was a period when he skyrocketed to stardom.  I became a fan of Prince in a post-Revolution Prince era, but I totally appreciate every era of Prince and respect everyone who worked with him.  I did a video once about them, and my comments were taken completely out of context.  I hope to interview them one day.

When did you start your YouTube channel?

I released my first video, I am Prince’s Friend – My First Prince Album, on July 31, 2016.  When Prince died in April, I was grieving and wanted to talk with other people that were going through the same thing that I was. I wanted to explore Prince’s work album by album and song by song and to create a discussion community.  Today, over 370 videos later, I have over 14,000 followers and am approaching 2,000,000 views on my channel. I now create all kinds of Prince-related content as well as look at some non-Prince artists as well. I love it today as much as the day I launched my first video. Moreso even because I have learned so much and I get to talk with so many people from all over the world in the purple army about my hero, Prince.

Is it hard to have a YouTube channel?

This started as a hobby in mid-2016 and has become a full time job just a few years later. Because of the vast amount of work that Prince created in his career, there is no shortage of things to explore and discuss. Producing videos and keeping up with the information, research, and technology takes a lot of time, effort and money.  There were so many things that I didn’t know about when I first started, so it’s been a great learning experience. I have learned about the YouTube platform, social networking, research, script writing, planning, budgeting, interviewing, cameras, audio equipment, editing, lighting, sets, marketing, search optimization, graphics, and so much more. Above all, I have learned from my learning. There’s always something new to think about. It is hard, but I “work it like a job” as Prince once said and I love it.  It’s my passion and I am all in.
